A nation birthed by bold revolution
now suffering a jumped-up would-be King
despite the founders’ strong constitution
how could their law be such a broken thing
– poisoned so, by the cunning fascist’s sting…
The tyrant can’t be broken using force
– garnered a band of brutish thugs of course
but being laughed at – one thing he can’t stand
marching in fancy dress, one such recourse
a steadfast, strong and democratic band!

Over at dVerse Poets Pub, Grace in Poetry Forms, invites us to write a Dizain – ten lines of ten syllables and a rhyme scheme of ABABBCCDCD.

The irony and humor may wear him down… until he forbids it.
Passing a law forbidding fancy dress might be too embarrassing in itself!
Nicely written and good use of the form.
I would back a candidate who insisted all politicians must wear clown suits. It seems more appropriate.
Look at Zelenky – he was a comedian…
Someone reminded me the other day that no-one knows when they are electing a dictator. Before election, the dictator always promises all sorts of reforms, and care for the people. What they actually do once in power is … well, I don’t need to tell you; you can see it happening.
Thanks, Rosemary, I had a feeling he stated his intention saying Americans would never need to vote again…
I was happy for the turn out of the No Kings Protest. I pray that the USA get their act together. Peace!!! Have a great weekend.
I hope so too Grace – have a great weekend too…
You’ve taken the dizain form and turned it into a sword to skewer “a jumped-up would-be King” and rally “a steadfast, strong and democratic band!” And thankfully, we can use all the rallying we can get. Love the strong notes of protest in this dizain and its purposeful progression, Andrew.
I love poems that make a strong political statement. The U.S and India have actually orphaned democracy by electing tyrants.
There is so much to comment on in the world and poems are my contribution, – though the novel I am writing is partly set in India and Modi makes a small but devastating appearance in it. I shall be looking for Alpha readers – especially for that subplot…
We’ve just about made it through the first year…
And at least the SNAP payments came through, if a little late…
