Out of the court
up the street
the roofs all shining grey
in the grey dawn
plodding along the
black dusty road
the groaning of the pit-engine
Soon the road grew white
at the wall’s foot grew
long grass and gay flowers
drenched with dew
the skylark saying his matins
the pit-bird warbling in the sedges
