In April the Challenge is A-Z
other writing takes a back seat
writing my blog fills my head
and for this year I double dipped
two A-Z themes I interbred
– I wrote about Commodities and
with a poem drove home what I said
but now the challenge is complete
it’s normal service in my head…

Back to the novel and down to the
pub – the dVerse Poets Pub that is
to virtual friends, poets all like me
it’s not, however, all about the likes
but novels, blogging or poems we
certainly desire to be well-read
but truly I must write for me
the itch induces constant scratches
– if that is you too please comment and like me…

Written for Grace in Poetry Forms over at dVerse Poets Pub who today invites us to use the Magic 9 poetic form whose rhyme scheme is derived from the word abracadabra – I have taken the liberty of using the form as a stanza form as I wasn’t done after a mere nine lines…
You can find my A-Z on Commodities with 26 poetry forms via the button at the top of the page and more of my poems via the Poems button.
April poetry challenges can be fun, but also intense. I was doing one, as well.
And yes, we should write for ourselves, but it is also wonderful to be read. 💙
I want to find some Open Mic nights locally because most of all I enjoy reading poetry out loud, my own or others, Merril…
I so agree! I often read the dVerse poems aloud, and feel uplifted and transformed. Poetry WANTS to be verbalized.
Thanks Kim, I may have to try and start an open mic night locally – there are lots of events in Sheffield where two of my grandsons live (and one of them writes poetry) but that is an hour and a half drive away…
The itch certainly scratches, that’s for sure. It is nice to be read too.
Indeed Di – thanks for visiting…
You’re right, it isn’t about the likes. Anyone can leave a like (except me, often WP won’t let me) but the real accolade is when people actually pay to read what you’ve written. You know you’re worth something then 🙂
Oh I think if one started getting paid then watching/chasing the stats would be worse still…
I enjoy you. I like you. Your writing inspires me. I look forward to reading what comes next. I like the way you used “ZED? in the magic 9. I like the way you couldn’t stop with the challenge and carried on …. carried on. Are those enough likes for you this fine Friday? I am laughing now. [blogger doesn’t let me ‘like’ on wordpress]
I know the poem made me seem like a “like” hound but it started with the double meaning of “poets
Haha April was a busy poetry month. I followed the prompts for Writers Digest for 2 weeks. I used to go to open mics but, I haven’t in a long time.
Keep writing
Thanks Truedessa!
like me” so then I had to use the other meaning lol. Your comment made me laugh too Helen…
I’m still ‘catching up’ from April.🤭
LOL
It’s true, the need to write is an itch we must satisfy! Two very solid magic 9 poems, Andrew 🙂
Thank you Sunra – I like writing straightforward “conversational” poems in verse form…
I have that itch, too. And I like to be read but it doesn’t keep me from writing if I don’t get a comment though I do like them.
Yes! That is how I feel…
Writing balances me out so the itch to write is always there. Hope the muse keeps in you good company for a long time.
you have raised big issues in your 9 lines (doubled) – after the itch comes the scratch but is it the likes, the feedback, the praise or the paid for? Especially today, our poems are more easily shared but there is always the risk of becoming like one of Skinner’s pigeons – moulded and modified. On the brighter side, poetry requires a voice – words are not enough so we find our voice in places like the pub – I hope you find your open mic night ( and thank you too for being such an encouraging poet to others – I appreciate your feedback)
Thank you Laura for your kind words – i see no point in commenting if it is not to be encouraging. Of all the poets at the pub, we must live the closest – you in North Yorkshire and i just the other side of Skipton – perhaps we should have a meet up sometime?
Hi Andrew, your poem me me smile. Well done.
thank you for letting me know you smiled Robbie – what more can one ask…
🌞
I really like how you chose the dVerse Poets Pub as your topic, and definitely share your outlook. Well done! I’m looking forward to reading more.
Hi Andrew! Can you please contact me at [email protected]? I have a question for you. Thanks.
Andrew, I really enjoyed your double magic 9. Your feedback is always appreciated. I do agree writing is an itch and needs to be scratched. Likes are good but comments are best as for being paid for what I write, I have a long way to go. Till then, likes and comments are enough. 🙂
