It’s time to divorce the car!
The car is killing the planet
Cars and ships and planes too
Busses and bikes are healthier alternatives
The health of the planet needs us to be healthier
You can’t walk away from this but you should walk more
Walk, cycle, car-share if you must, help yourself to help the planet
The time for tinkering with changing lightbulbs is in the rear-view mirror
A rear-view mirror magnifies the causes of global warming
but now is the time to look forward and act decisively
It is not just governments that need to act but you!
Changing your relationship with your car will be hard
The solutions are multifaceted but
For you, it’s simply time to divorce the car!

Responding to Björn Rudberg (brudberg) in Meeting the Bar: over at dVerse Poets Pub…
The less we drive the better it is… I agree
Thanks for visiting Björn, I’m afraid mine is not to the same depth as yours but I think it is rhetorical…

We don’t have a car… but that’s primarily due to matters of money and convenience, so I can’t take the high ground…

I do have a car because the car grew cities and suburbs in a way that makes it difficult to do without them but it’s such a come problem without a single solution and I am writing an essay that will be on the blog soon…

Most days I am granted a “divorce from automobile” .. I gladly embrace the decree. Thanking the Universe my two legs propel me upright and forward, that I live in a walkable city. Cheers and Bravo to you for this delightful bit of rhetoric!

Very true. I am sure we all would moan and gran for a bit and then get used to living without cars. It is a neccessary step for the health of our planet. Great take on the prompt – I was hooked at the title.

Andrew, your title really grabs the reader’s attention. You make a compelling argument for divorce here.

Good points! But I need my car, so will, unfortunately, continue with my marriage to it. ;D
Me too unfortunately but I am writing an essay about the holistic change that is needed, planning, technology, car pooling facilitation but it’s the attitudinal shift that is going to be tough since we live in a world shaped by the car and we are wedded to the private ownership, status symbol, it’s my human right to own a car thing…

I went years at a time without a car (once with a child) and managed to make do. I even lived in California for a short time without one. I sold it before I moved there. I walked and rode a bike. Do you ever think about the real “olden” days when people walked and rode horses? What would today’s people do?😂
Whilst living in Ireland, I broke my hip in a car crash and didn’t drive for five years. We lived 35 miles from the nearest city, Sligo, so I had to travel by bus – it was great – I could really look at the beautiful scenery and get to talk to people!

Oh, I love this! And what an image. Do a little walking…healthier for us and the planet. I wish there were more public transportation options. We are so far behind Europe it is sickening. Good post!
